Pardon the Interruption (07-28-09)

By Ryan Hogan

Today on the show, Tony and Mike talked about old quarterbacks, bad general managers, Pete Rose and rare baseball feats. Tony and Mike spent Five Good Minutes with Tony Kanaan–more like five great minutes. It was an awesome interview. Kanaan was terrific and thankfully Tony stayed quiet through most of it. The boys introduced a new game on today’s show, What’s The Word.

Pardon the Interruption stars Tony Kornhesier and Mike Wilbon. It's seen everyday at 2:30pm PDT on ESPN.

Pardon the Interruption stars Tony Kornheiser (left), former columnist for The Washington Post, and Mike Wilbon (right), current columnist for The Washington Post. PTI is seen everyday at 2:30pm PDT on ESPN.

HEADLINES

Staying Retired
Brett Favre says he wants to remain retired.

Mike: Nothing is out of question. I will not surprised me if the day after next he comes out of retirement. None of this is based on logic.
Tony: Vikings have been patience suitors. They will take him in November if he wants to play. I think he thinks back on his legacy and worries about how it ended with Jets.

  • “Wilbon is sick of the story. Will he can thank his employer for that.”
  • Should Minaya’s Job Be In Jeopardy?
    Mets General Manager, Omar Minaya.

Mike: Here’s what he’s done, he put a team on the field that should have contended. Not his fault that they collapse.
Tony: Minaya is GM of Mets he should not be getting in public debate with sports writer about his ambition. He doesn’t look like he’s in control.

  • “Another example of the gulf between sports hacks and fans. Minaya had every right to question the gold digger reporters motives. Why can’t a reporter have motives? Plus the Mets have a good team it’s just none of them are healthy.”
  • Selig Will Not Reinstate Rose?

Mike: I don’t think we predicted he would be reinstated, we just called for it. Selig and Aaron are friends and we thought Aarons comments reflected Selig’s. They don’t.
Tony: There’s no real hall of fame with out Rose. Selig doesn’t have to pardon Rose, all he has to do is say to baseball writers put him in the hall.

  • “Have to agree with Wilbon about PTI’s take on Rose. In fact remember Kornheiser saying Rose will never get in hall via a quote of David Justice.”
  • Will It End Well In Buffalo?
    Terrell Owens in Buffalo.

Mike: When we get late into the season, how will this turn out?
Tony: T.O. is a tough guy. His problem is with OC’s and QB’s. Buffalo is second smallest city in NFL and T.O. puts them in top tier. He’s a big star and Buffalo needs a big star.

  • “Kornheiser completely demeans the city of Buffalo. This story really shows Tony’s contempt for small town U.S.A.. Sorry Kornheiser, not every city can be New York or L.A.”
  • Does Willingham Compare?
Nats slugger Willingham hits two grand slams last night.

Mike: Yes, but the pitching of the perfect game is more impressive.
Tony: There’s a lot more no-hitters than perfect games, but two grand slams require a lot of luck. It’s an astounding accomplishment.

  • “Did the Nats win? If any team could hit two homers and lose, it would be the Nats (however they won 14-6).”

    FIVE GOOD MINUTES

    Tony Kanaan

    1. I’m okay. I have some burns on my face and no eye brows.
    2. It was pretty scary to be on fire. It was not pleasant.
    3. I knew I was going to catch on fire so I drove away so I wouldn’t burn my teammates. I knew I would be safe in the car for a while.
    4. If I had the visor up, my face would have caught fire. Having the visor down was huge. I was on fire for more than 40 seconds.
    5. Any time we get in the car you don’t know if you’ll get out. I don’t think about it. It’s part of the job.
    6. I’m the same guy I was before. I want to race again. I have unfinished business to do.
    7. My mom told me not to do it and then when I said I was she said “race slow.”
  • “Great interview. Some of PTI’s best work.”

Mike: Self absorbed. He hit a walk off grand slam. These teams play tonight.
Tony: Egomaniacal. He showed up the Astros.

  • “Wonder if Kornheiser would have said that if Soriano still played for the Yankees.”

  • “They seem to be over reacting to Bonds’ appearance.”
  • Shaq on Monday Night Raw was___

Mike: Appropriate. Shaq is the only guy that understands entertainment value.
Tony: Grasping. Totally cheesy. I love Shaq but this was ridiculous disingenuous.

  • “Kornheiser completely misses the point. WWE is pure fun. Shaq was having a good time.”
  • Dude catches foul ball with his baby in his other arm was___

Mike: Skilled. He got mad skills. I want to think I could do this.
Tony: Inspirational. He could have dropped the kid but he made the play.

  • “Shocked. Thought the boys would crucify this horrible father.”
