Kevin Youkilis and Rick Porcello Ejected For Fisticuffs (VIDEO)

At the risk of sounding barbaric, Bombastic Sports felt the Major League needed a good bench clearing brawl. After all, the league hadn’t had one in while and a fracas is rather splendid way to get the ole blood pumping.

Tuesday night, our bloodlust was satisfied as the Messrs. Kevin Youkilis and Rick Porcello duked it out at Fenway Park in Boston. Their respective teams, the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, vacated their cozy benches and convened on the diamond for an old fashion donnybrook.

The hostilities between these two teams commenced Monday night when the Tigers Miguel Cabrera and Brandon Inge were both hit by pitches originating from the arms of Red Sox hurlers. Meanwhile, Youkilis suffered through a plunking in the bottom half of the fourth.

Tuesday night the animosity started almost immediately. Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa hit Cabrera in the frist. Then in the bottom half of the same inning, Porcello threw inside to Red Sox slugger Victor Martinez.

Youkilis was the preeminent batter of the second inning and was struck by Procello’s first pitch. The Red Sox third baseman relinquished his bat and charged Procello with much alacrity. On his sojourn to the mound, Youkilis discharged his helmet in his general direction of Procello. Nary a moment passed before players spilled out of their respective dugouts.

Bravo!

“The only thing I have to say about that is I was not intentionally trying to hit Kevin Youkilis. It was unintentional,” said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.

Our penchant for violence may seem boorish, but the chance of anyone from either team actually getting seriously hurt was quite remote. These fights are stopped almost as soon as they begin.

However, one has to ask where was this Red Sox vigor while they were being swept by the New York Yankees?

The baseball gods had the final guffaw. Mike Lowell, who replaced Youkilis, struck two home runs. The Red Sox captured the victory 7-5.

Even more egregious than the squabble was the ejection of Red Sox manager Terry Francona for passionately disagreeing with the umpire about a call at second base. The umpire ejected Francona after he turned away and then gave the skipper a rather challenging shrug. We found the umpire’s behavior quite churlish and we hope he faces stiff punitive action.
