HEADLINES

Rex: Shocked If We Don’t Win?
Rex Ryan, coach of the New York Jets.

Mike:I won’t be shocked if the Jets don’t win and I won’t be shocked if they win. I was in San Diego. I like defensive football although it’s been legislated out of game.
Tony: I will be shocked if the Jets lose. Colts haven’t lost a game they’ve wanted to win all year. Would be major upset to me.

  • “Wilbon receives no points for once again disparaging the NFL. Kornheiser is right. If the Jets win it should be a shock because they have been benefactors of two teams that have collapsed. BTW, what is Ryan supposed to say?”
  • WILBON:0 KORNHEISER:2
  • Is Gailey A Good Hire?
Chan Gailey hired as Buffalo Bills head coach.

Mike: I was hoping that Lesile Frazier got a shot at this.
Tony: He would not have been on my radar. He did a good job at Georgia Tech and Dallas. The whole thing has the look of the guy you hire before you go out of business. What’s the difference between Dick Jauron and Chan Gailey?

  • “The “going out of business line” was classic.”
  • WILBON:0 KORNHEISER:3
  • Surprised Norv Got Extension?
San Diego Chargers give coach Norv Turner an extension.

Mike: I’m not stunned. I thought it was possible. What is the end game at San Diego? After the performance on Sunday, I don’t see that team going any further.
Tony: When it comes on the heels of a playoff loss it seems like they are rewarding his team’s demise. There’s only four coaches in league that have coached longer than Turner.

  • “Wilbon’s comments were a little self-centered. Kornerheiser’s analysis was brilliant. He even had a stat.”
  • WILBON:0 KORNHEISER:5
  • Was K-State Win An Upset?
Kansas State defeated number one Texas Monday night.

Mike: Football games you can use the term upset more. In college basketball, there’s a history at Kansas State.
Tony: It’s not an upset when you’re a top ten team and you’re laying a conference game at home.

  • “Although not documented here, their brief discussion on K-State’s coach was for more interesting. However, since the four preceding topics were all about coaches (bad producing) they had to veer away and talk about something else. Therefore, no points awarded.”
  • WILBON:0 KORNHEISER:5
  • 16 Best Teams In Playoffs?
Hoops World suggests a new playoff format.

Mike: I like a concept so much I wrote about it 5,10,15 years ago. It’s smart but David Stern doesn’t like it.
Tony: I believe in merit so I like it. If I’m in the East and I’m under .500 and they take the chance to make the playoffs away, I don’t like this. “You’re killing me whitey!”

  • “This is not only a non-issue (not originating from the league) but also a suggestion that decades old. No points awarded.”

    FIVE GOOD MINUTES

    Troy Aikman

    1. I would like to be leading the Minnesota Vikings. That’s a pretty good group that surrounds Brett Favre.
    2. I think Rex Ryan talking is healthy for the Jets. He’s given them a lot of confidence and swagger. There’s no reason for the Jets to feel lucky.
    3. My decision to retire was simple. I retired because of degenerative lower back condition.
    4. I don’t worry about Kurt Warner. He’s going to discuss it with a lot of people and make a good decision. I think he will retire.
    5. I thought Chan Gailey was an interesting hire. If they can continue to be good defense, Gailey will put together a good running game.
    6. I don’t know how staunch Jerry Jones has been, he’s waited until today, January 19th to pick up Phillips’ option and he has not given him an extension.
  • “Aikman was a great interview and the hosts did little to make it better or worse.”
  • WILBON:0 KORNHEISER:5

    TOSS UP!

    Rather Have: Peterson or Bush?

Mike: I want Reggie Bush. Peterson of this year wasn’t the Peterson of last year. Bush can return punts.
Tony: Peterson. He’s going to pound the middle and soften people up.

  • “Both hosts get a point as each successfully highlighted the back’s strengths.”
  • WILBON:1 KORNHEISER:6
  • Who Would Win: Nets or Kentucky?

Mike: The Dream Team once had a scrimmage against college kids and the college kids won. The next day the Dream Team shut them out. I’ll take the Nets and 30 points.
Tony: I believe the Nets would win and I would give 25 points every time they played.

  • “No points awarded and the producers should be shot. This is a stupid question.”
  • WILBON:1 KORNHEISER:6
  • Better Style: Overhand or Underhand?

Mike: Overhand. I work with Jon Barry and he could shoot. Maybe Jon should work with Biedrins.
Tony: This guy, Bierins, stinks. I think the guy should try it underhand.

  • “This is all they have to talk about? “
  • WILBON:1 KORNHEISER:6
  • Better Fan: Kardashian Or Prince?

Mike: Prince was a basketball player. He got purple from the Vikings. He’s a sports guy.
Tony: Kardashian. Prince sits in glass box and appears to be dead. He doesn’t move.

  • “Thought this was another ridiculous topic however, Wilbon made a very interesting case for Prince and Kornheiser’s views made him sound old and decrypted.”
  • WILBON:3 KORNHEISER:4

    HAPPY, HAPPY

Happy 48th birthday to Jeff Van Gundy (looks 68).
Happy anniversary to Digger Phelps. On this day 36 years ago Notre Dame ended UCLA winning streak.
Happy trails to Mike Nolan. Broncos defensive coordinator and the team have parted ways.

    ERRORS

Reali: First time in history Wilbon went against a babe in Toss Up!

    SHOUT OUTS

Mike: Joe Lanardi, where is Northwestern?
Tony: I’m yielding my time to you.

    TODAY’S WINNER

  • Mike made a run in Toss Up! but Tony’s lead was too great. Kornheiser wins.
