Pardon the Interruption (02-01-10)

By Ryan Hogan

Today on the show, Tony and Mike talked about the Super Bowl, Kentucky basketball, Roger Federer, Celtics vs. Lakers, and Rex Ryan. Tony and Mike spent Five Good Minutes with Peter King and then answered viewers’ questions in Mail Time! Kornheiser delivered the phrase of the day, “Obama loves you.” The hosts showed how out of touch they are with the world by claiming MMA is repulsive.

Pardon the Interruption stars Tony Kornhesier and Mike Wilbon. It's seen everyday at 2:30pm PDT on ESPN.

How Big A Deal Is Freeney Injury?
Dwight Freeney has grade 3 sprained ankle.

Mike: It’s going to have a big impact one would think since he’s one of the league’s best pass rusher. We don’t know if Freeney is going to play or not.
Tony: I think we will be lied to all week and I’m sure this will be no different. I’m sure Sean Peyton is crafting plays to run with out him. I think this puts more pressure on Peyton Manning.

  • “On one hand Tony says we may be lied too and then claims Sean Peyton is drawing up plays to take advantage of no Freeney. His comments were just too all over the place.”

  • Wall Upset With Calipari?

Mike: It’s symptomatic of a problem is that these kids don’t want to be coached. When they do get coached these kids flip out. But guys like you say, “no, no don’t go to college.” He needs this. He needs more than one year of this.
Tony: My guess is this is the first time John Wall has ever been criticized by a coach? What is he not going to come back to Kentucky next year?

  • “While Wilbon was a little over-the-top his analysis is correct. Kornheiser did too much apologizing for Wall’s behavior.”
  • WILBON:2 KORNHEISER:0
  • Can Federer Win The Slam?

Mike: Yeah, I think I smell a Grand Slam for Federer. Who is going to beat him? However, best performance of the weekend belonged to Serena.
Tony: He’s been in 16 slam finals in last 18 but he’s only won 8. He’s never won it before so I don’t think he’ll win it now. I doubt it.

  • “Enjoyed both comments and appreciate Tony’s stat.”
  • WILBON:3 KORNHEISER:2
  • Was Pierce Call Fair?
Paul Pierce called for offense foul in Celtics and Lakers game.

Mike: It was a legit call. Artest is not a flopper. He’s not Divac. If they hadn’t made the call I wouldn’t have had a problem.
Tony: It was a totally legitimate call. It was called before Artest fell into crowd. Celtics can’t hold a lead anymore.

  • “It was the worst call of the year. NBA should be embarrassed and Artest’s flop only adds to the situation. Both host loses a point.”
  • WILBON:2 KORNHEISER:1
  • Should Ryan Be Punished?
Rex Ryan gave fans finger at MMA event.

Mike: No. I’m tired of everyone being offended by everything. He was at a MMA event. On a scale of things, flipping the bird is about 883rd on my list.
Tony: Who was the owner who gave double-barrel to the fans? Do you have any doubt that he will do this again in like five days? People do this in traffic. Doesn’t anything offend.

  • “Wilbon loses a point. While he complains of people’s overt sensitivity he’s just as sensitive when it comes to a plethora of topics most associated with the NFL. Tony failed to recognized that Bud Adams gave finger at an NFL event and Ryan was at a MMA event.”

    FIVE GOOD MINUTES

    Peter King

    1. When you have a grade 3 level sprain, the ligaments are more than 50% torn. The worst part is it’s his right ankle which is key in his pass rush style. I don’t think he’ll be very effective.
    2. I don’t think Tim Tebow hurt himself very much because he was what everyone thought he was.
    3. I believe the team that picks him, somewhere between 25-40, will have designs on making him a QB but it will be a long term project.
    4. The only thing that concerns me with Donovan McNabb is pretty soon you’ll have to sign him to a long term contract and what do you do with Kobb then?
    5. The reason why Mike Martz will make a difference with the Bears because there’s a huge similarity between Jay Cutler and Kurt Warner.
    6. I’m going to pick the Colts. I don’t think anyone has done a good job pressuring Manning. Eventually, Manning figures it out. Saints will be able to score but Colts win narrowly.
  • “Another terrific King interview. The host did little to screw it up.”

    MAIL TIME!

    Biggest Takeaway of Weekend?

    Mike: The ACC being mediocre.
Tony: President Obama got up and walked over to Mike Wilbon. That is up top to you. Other than that Cornell pounding Harvard. Obama loves you.

  • “At least Wibon didn’t dropped the President’s name.”
  • WILBON:2 KORNHEISER:1
  • Impressed By Herschel?

Mike: Yes, he won. Look at Herschel pound that guy like he’s a Florida Gator. Does he look 48?
Tony: That’s what you should be impressed with. He’s 47 year old guy and he looks like a god? The sport is repulsive.

  • “MMA is repulsive? Good these hosts be more out of touch? MMA is much less repulsive than boxing.”
  • WILBON:1 KORNHEISER:0
  • Respect For White?
Shaun White rallied from crash in practice.

Mike: It’s not like White wasn’t respected before.
Tony: He’s a great athlete. 60 Minutes has him making $10 million a year?

  • “Wilbon recognized White’s greatness while Kornheiser insulted him over his suspected income.”
  • WILBON:2 KORNHEISER:0
  • Yelling At Fan: Fair or Foul?
PBA bowler yells at camera man.

Mike: You have to be quiet. It’s like golf. There’s usually silence.
Tony: We like PBW because of those shades he wear. I think he should hire Stevie Williams because he doesn’t have a gig right now. Williams would take the camera and smash it like an egg.

  • “Eh.”

    HAPPY, HAPPY

Happy 39th birthday to Michael C. Hall (actor who plays Dexter).
Happy anniversary to James Harrison. On this day last year he had a game changing interception return for a touchdown to end 1st half.
Happy trails to Tom Brookshier (1931-2010).

    ERRORS

Reali: You guys have to watch Dexter. Pro Bowl watched by 12 and half million.

    SHOUT OUTS

Mike: Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli for their rendition of “Bridge Over Trouble Waters.”
    Tony: Erie, Pennsylvania.

    TODAY’S WINNER

  • Mike. Neither host had a particularly great show and Tony probably should have lost for giving a shout out to that Diva Blige. She publicly berated her band, in front of the Grammy crowd, Sunday night.
